Syria death toll tops 100,000, says UN chief

Corps:

UN chief Ban Ki-moon says the continuing conflict in Syria has claimed over 100-thousand lives – seven thousand more than an earlier estimate.

He spoke alongside US Secretary of State John Kerry at the UN headquarters in New York.

“The conflict is now continuing for almost two-and-a-half years. More than 100,000 people have been killed. Millions of people have either been displaced or become refugees in neighbouring countries. We have to bring this to an end,” said Ban.

Kerry said that there was no military option on the table for Syria.

“There is only a political solution. And that will require leadership in order to bring people to the table,” he said.

The comments came on the same day that a car bomb reportedly killed at least ten people – and injured dozens more – on the edge of the Syrian capital Damascus.

The blast is said to have happened in a square in Jaramanah. The religiously-mixed area is home to both opponents and supporters of President Bashar al-Assad.
